Workforce Development Committees

The Workforce Development Program administers and supports services and products designed to improve the skills of the existing workforce and provide entry-level opportunities for people entering the construction industry. The following is a short description of our 2011 program offerings:

We are proud to announce that a new website featuring the work of Extern Educators, Junior ACE Mentors, and LEED's Career GPS at http://sacyolocte.org/

The program offers wage reimbursement to employers who hire unemployed people to fill new employment needs. Employers receive an average $5,000 based upon the training needs of the new employee and availability of funds. Funded through the Sacramento Employment & Training Agency, the funds are provided by the Department of Labor through the Workforce Investment Act.

Facilities Maintenance training involves learning how to properly maintain, diagnose, and make minor repairs to electrical components, HVAC systems, plumbing fixtures and systems including swimming pools, landscape elements including masonry, appliances, and small engine repair. For entry-level apprentices, the training covers two years and includes a combination of on-the-job training and classroom training. For existing employees, the training is reduced based upon ability and competence of the employee being indentured.
Currently, the program is being funded by a subgrant from the Home Builders Institute, using funds by US Department of Labor.

Participating employers provide Sacramento area educators 40 hours of work experience, in order to learn how what they teach is relevant in the workplace.
The educators then develop a lesson plan which they teach to their students. The students evaluate the lesson and participating employers, educators, and students come together in December to learn about each other’s efforts. The program is funded by Cosumnes River College & Sacramento City College with funds from the California Community College Chancellor’s Office.

YouthBuild:
“High-risk” youth ages 18 to 24 learn basic construction skills in the trades taught by the Facilities Maintenance Apprenticeship program. Youth also earn a High School Diploma or GED while enrolled in the program. Youth work on projects developed by HomeAid and Rebuilding Together Sacramento. Members are encouraged to donate time and materials to assist the training program in its efforts. YouthBuild is operated by the Sacramento Regional Conservation Corps, with funds from the US Department of Labor.

Next Step Program:
The program is designed to inform students from the 7th grade through college about careers in the construction industry, especially the home building industry. The program also provides specific “next step” training or employment opportunities in the industry. The program maintains a Workforce Development website (http://www.biaworkforce.com), participating in school and community career & job fairs, making presentations to school classes, and assisting students with developing resumes and learning how to properly interview for a job. Members have the opportunity to join with staff to give talks to students at school, provide internships, and participate in career fairs.
